DEAD AIR is the DIY futuristic musical guise of Rainy Orteca, already familiar to many as an integral member of New York trio Joan As Police Woman.

Self-taught guitarist and general purveyor of musical excellence, Rainy Orteca comes to the fore with a frankly intimidating musical CV; previously working with such visionaries as Antony & the Johnsons, Lou Reed, Lloyd Cole, Lesley Gore and the aforementioned Joan As Police Woman.

Deftly diffused between atmospheric filmic ballads, and sonorous electronica…’DEAD AIR’ is a profoundly startling collection of charmingly abstract digital diorama and wanton storytelling from another time and place - all gently cloaked with a voice that will make you come undone.

Rainy Orteca: “Mostly, I think with DEAD AIR that I\'m trying to tell stories that might exist in another place. It\'s abstract, sometimes edgy & futuristic but accessible too. It’s like if that female computer voice in the film “Alien” made a record. The one that says "T-minus 60 seconds & counting…". It\'s at the end of the movie & she\'s telling everyone they have 60 seconds to live - the information is coldly delivered but at the same time she sounds so warm & inviting…“ 



Raised in Maine, Rainy’s pre-teen musical diet included Bowie, Zappa, Fleetwood Mac and T-Rex. Her teenage years brought a wider musical influence: Jazz, Folk, Punk and inevitably New Wave – The Pretenders, The Clash, The Cars, Blondie, B-52s, The Ramones.
By the time she reached college DEAD AIR was born, initially as a name for her late-night radio show, lucky listeners would hear her play The Violent Femmes, The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, Kate Bush….

Finding herself in Philadelphia in the early 90s with the US Grunge scene at its height, Rainy heard that Courtney Love’s band HOLE had lost their bassist, and brazenly submitted a tape to their manager. Courtney came calling and learning bass guitar started days later with rehearsals for ‘Live Through This’ and although the Hole gig never happened, she was soon in demand with other musicians, finally accepting an offer to play with Joan Osborne on a tour of Japan. For the next three years, Rainy toured the world, appearing on Top Of The Pops & The Grammys, and co-writing songs with Ms.Osborne before quitting music (temporarily) to settle in New York.

It was comic Sarah Silverman who coaxed Rainy out of her early musical retirement and Rainy tip-toed back in, playing for Lloyd Cole and Dave Derby’s band Brilliantine before a call from Joan Wasser who had just started Joan As Police Woman ….

So here we are in 2008, the year when Rainy Orteca will step out on her own with the DEAD AIR mini-album, filled with 6 breathtaking songs from a true artist with a highly skilled, innovative and unique musical mind

Sparsely arranged, slyly intelligent country-folk stuffed with juniper winds, Juarez jails and long women in short dresses, delivered with all the gruff urgency of Tom Waits over lap steel and ruptured guitar.

For his 2005 debut Nels harnessed the sounds of the desert; here on Off Track Betting he’s kept that basic sound but tampered with it somewhat by adding some odd instruments and assorted percussion . These changes are probably in part due to his recent move to NYC and the addition of a known producer in Todd Sickafoose. The new sounds mimic some of what you might hear in a busy city so that makes sense.  

Nels Andrews – “The last couple years for me have been a life in the margins, sleeping on floors and in parking lots, slipping in and out of bars and coffee shops in towns that barely knew I was there. I’d lived this marginal life before,  in my early twenties, chasing Kerouac down the road, working itinerant jobs in the canneries of Alaska and planting trees in the forests of South Dakota.  In this way, my past laid the road before me, easing the transition from the between years, when I was deep-rooted in the desert, to the well-worn boots of a troubadour, the one’s I’ve been wearing lately.  I’ve found a romantic optimism that comes from distance, and saw it in the Off Track Betting house downstairs from my apartment in Brooklyn.
When I landed last year in this new big city hometown, I was hit with a whole new set of textures, and rhythms; to counter these I sought solace in abandoned piers and rooftops, replacing the mesas and sagebrush oceans of New Mexico.
These songs are voices from a campground in the desert winter, from behind the wheel of a yellow cab, of driving a rented car through the streets of a town that froze in time and still treats you like a stranger.  These songs are hymns to that place, when you’re not lost, but you’re not quite there yet, when all you can do is know deep down that the next exit must be yours,  “screaming like a blind man at the races”.

Nels’ first album, Sunday Shoes, released independently in 2005, was picked by BBC2\'s legendary DJ Bob Harris as his Album of the Year.   .
Fast forward to today, and the release Andrew\'s second record, Off Track Betting, produced by Todd Sickafoose and due to be released March this year on Reveal Records and is set to be one of the landmark Americana releases of 2008. The new songs were recorded in Brooklyn at Trout Studios, and now spring from the textures and rhythms of New York City, as seen from the abandoned piers and rooftops as a new form of the red desert dust and sagebrush oceans.

This magical indie rock band hail from Manchester England. Thier debut live performance was an improv gig with Damo Suzuki of Kraut Rock pioneers Can, whilst they grew up on a diet of Velvets, Nirvana, Oasis and Sonic Youth!

below is the first ever review of Black Water sent in from an early promo copy being handed to Paul.  

'Blackwater' was produced by John McCusker at Pure Studios. If I hadn't read the credits, I would have known it was John anyway both from the production and from his own contributions. Kris also has the sterling support of Kate Rusby herself, Andy Cutting, Eddi Reader, Roddy Woomble, Andy Seward and Donald Shaw - names to make your mouth water. I just love the way these people work together, live and on one another's albums - never incestuous, just great networking with each one taking their turn at the front. They add colour to the album, but Kris' voice and guitar are always the main focus.

The traditional material includes the well known - Patrick Spence (didn't think I ever wanted to hear another version but Kris makes it new again) and Green Grow the Laurel, together with Braw Sailin' on the Sea and the secret track (don't tell anyone) Farewell to Fuineray which others may know but I didn't.

Contemporary material is well chosen to include laments for lost work which, though hard, gave people identity in Boo Hewardine's Harvest Gypsies and the magnificent Navigator, to the consequences in Poor Man's Son when work has no identity and robbery is turned to instead, to more elusive themes with Steel and Stone (Black Water) and Beads and Feathers.

All in all, there really is nothing to fault in this album. We're going to be hearing a lot more of Kris Drever, make sure you start here.
